AZUSA RESIDENTS VALUE CITY SERVICES AND WANT LOCAL 911, PUBLIC SAFETY AND YOUTH PROGRAMS MAINTAINED
This summer, the City of Azusa commissioned an independent Community Issues Survey, by the research firm of Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates (FM3 Research). The results show a majority of residents feel the City and their neighborhoods are headed in the right direction but are concerned about the City’s ability to fund and maintain essential services such as police, fire and gang prevention services. 76% of respondents said the City has a need for additional funding to maintain the services that Azusa residents need and want.
“The cost of fire protection and 911 emergency response services in Azusa increased 16% last year and will continue to rise significantly each year,” said City Manager Sergio Gonzalez. “Maintaining current firefighter and paramedic staffing levels, and 911 emergency response times may require additional local funding.”
Residents also identified several other local priorities, including:
- Continuing police anti-gang enforcement programs
- Addressing homelessness
- Maintaining police patrols of neighborhood schools
- Maintaining police patrols of neighborhoods, parks and recreations areas
- Preventing reductions to police officer staffing levels
- Maintaining city services
- Repairing streets and potholes
Said Police Chief Mike Bertelsen, “Over the last few years state prisons have given early release to several criminals, which has resulted in an increase of gang-related crime in our community. We are striving to maintain Azusa police officer staffing levels and patrols to respond to this increase and keep criminals out of our community, and improve our local neighborhood safety.”
